"Times change, our lives change. The Bayswater remains a Mulberry icon." Johnny Coca, Creative Director
A Mulberry Bayswater handbag, the chocolate brown darwin leather exterior with traditional brass tone postman's lock, rollled handles and top flap opening to internal zip and slip pocket, with maker's dustbag, original tag and booklet. Dimensions 36 x 29 x 15cm. £400-600.
The Mulberry Bayswater is without a doubt the brand's most iconic bag. Instantly recognisable, the Bayswater was launched in 2003. Comprising a simple structure, twin rolled handles and signature postman’s lock, this bestselling bag was designed by Nicolas Knightly.
The Mulberry Bayswater is the ultimate British ‘It’ bag, and continues to sell well at auction, with high prices achieved particularly for commercial colours, exotic or rare finishes. A staple in any fashionistas wardrobe, the Bayswater is an institution in itself, as Mulberry’s former Creative Director Emma Hill said "I have a Bayswater, my son's grandmother has a Bayswater, Kate Moss has a Bayswater".
Under the helm of Creative Director Johnny Coca, the Mulberry Bayswater has recently been redesigned, adapting the silhouette to suit the modern woman. The most noticeable feature of the New Bayswater is the smaller Postman’s lock, featuring Mulberry text engraving as opposed to the Mulberry tree logo seen in the classic Bayswater bags. The new Bayswater features a range of designs to include zipped fastenings, adjustable side gussets and shoulder straps in certain designs. Consigned to our sale is a wonderful example of a ‘new’ Bayswater, a black quilted ‘Small Bayswater’ bag, purchased by our vendor from the Old Bond Street store a couple of years ago.
A Mulberry Small Bayswater bag, the smooth black calf leather exterior with quilted detailing, double rolled leather handles and smooth leather top flap closure with silver tone postman's lock, with detachable shoulder strap and rust fabric interior, with maker's dustbag. Dimensions 28 x 30 x 12cm. £400-600.
A Mulberry Alexa handbag, the gold leather exterior with polished rose gold-tone hardware, front flap pocket with postman's lock fastening, braided leather top handle, and long detachable crossbody strap to the beige logo canvas lined interior, with maker's dustbag. Dimensions 32 x 23 x 17cm. £200-300
Another ‘It’ bag in its own right, the Mulberry Alexa was released in January 2010. Named after fashion model and broadcaster Alexa Chung, the Alexa was born when the design team came across an image of the model holding a vintage Mulberry briefcase. Creative Director of the time Emma Hill recalled “we thought designing a bag that was inspired by Alexa, by that particular image, was just… a nice thing to do. And, of course, Mulberry has this tradition of naming bags after girls. But it wasn't a collaboration [with Chung]; she didn't contribute to the design process."
Encompassing a low-key cool, the Alexa satchel bag with beautifully braided top handle, signature postman’s lock, twin buckle detailing and detachable shoulder strap was born! An instant success, the Alexa has a waiting list of 9,000 when it was first released. The bag was so popular that it was said to ‘beat the recession’ at the time, quadrupling Mulberry’s profits in an otherwise challenging trading time!
Entered into our October Sale is a wonderful Alexa bag, in a beautiful ‘champagne’ leather finish, with rose gold tone hardware. In the small size of Alexa, this bag is the perfect addition to any wardrobe, and a collector’s piece in a sought-after finish.
