The bureau is a fantastic traditional item for those who like the idea of writing letters and locking up those private papers.  For practical space saving essential form of pre-computer age furniture which has now fallen out of fashion proving excellent value for money in today’s salerooms.  A good example of a George III bureau can be bought for as little as £100-200, but don’t be misled!

 

Queen Anne walnut bureau - Sold £4,500

A Queen Anne walnut example that is less than 36” wide will command four figures rather than a few hundred.  Easily identified with thick walnut veneers, steel hinges and locks, generally with herring bone inlay, moulding cut across the grain and brown oak drawer linings.  These are some of the pointers for identification.  Furniture of this age often had bun feet which are either replaced or upgraded to bracket feet which was considered more fashionable.

Be warned however, there are many 1930’s Queen Anne style re-production writing desks which are often beautifully made but not the real thing.
