Jewellery Auctions

Economic uncertainly and access to a global buying audience has fired the jewellery market at auction for a decade. Prices have strengthened for many gemstones with record prices paid for untreated coloured stones - particularly rubies, sapphires and emeralds - and natural saltwater pearls. Equally, the market remains robust for period pieces and artist’s jewellery of less intrinsic value and branded jewels by the great French and American ateliers such as Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels and Tiffany.

Clients selling through Peter Wilson Auctions have enjoyed success in all these categories. Recent highlights include a heart-shaped diamond sold to a local private buyer for £90,000 in September 2013 and £58,000 for a fully-certified Burmese ruby and diamond cluster ring with a central cushion form stone of over 10 carats in September 2010.

Research is an important part of our job. An unusual consignment from a local farming couple was a late 19th century ‘Grand Tour’ necklace comprising 27 Roman intaglios set in yellow gold. We engaged a specialist to properly catalogue the intaglios and produced a bespoke leaflet to distribute to potential buyers. These endeavours paid off when the necklace sold in September 2017 to a buyer in Hong Kong for £28,000.

Jewellery auctions are conducted regularly as part of our program of five annual Fine Art sales and regular Interiors events.
