Tribal Art

Tribal Art

Oceanic art, created by the native people of Australia and the South Pacific islands, including New Guinea and New Zealand, and African art, is broad and fascinating in its range and scope. African and Oceanic tribal art is becoming more widely recognised, and the world’s leading international tribal art fair, the Parcours des Mondes in Paris, has been held every year since 2002 to increasing acclaim.

If you’re new to the world of tribal art, it’s important to note that this is one area of collecting where genuine tribal artefacts sit side-by-side with contemporary pieces made for the tourist trade. Genuine tribal artefacts were made originally for a specific purpose within the tribe, whether ceremonious or personal, whereas ‘tourist art’ is made purely for display. Provenance is critical when assessing any piece of Tribal art and vastly adds to the value of pieces when sold at auction.

Tribal art at auction

Over the last few years there’s been a sharp upturn in interest in tribal art, and prices have risen accordingly. Values and prices vary enormously as the range of objects covered by this genre is so vast, but with more and more collectors discovering this area of collecting the market remains buoyant. The value of specific pieces of tribal art depends on rarity, provenance and condition. Most desirable are pieces that can be attributed to a specific tribe, and preferably come via a well-known collection. Get in touch if you’d like to discuss a potential sale or valuation.

In December 2016 Peter Wilson Auctioneers completed the sale of a massive single owner collection of African art. This impressive collection housed some 2215 items which we divided up into 800 lots and dispersed in six sales throughout the year. Having concluded the sale of this collection we now have a large mailing list of collectors, dealers and enthusiasts, very keen to aquire more items. Should you have any tribal art you are considering selling please email chris@peterwilson.co.uk or call 01270 623878.
