Asian Art

Asian art is a vast and varied area, encompassing work from East Asia (Japan, China, Mongolia and Korea); South Asia, including the Indian subcontinent; Central Asia including Tibet; Southeast Asia including Indonesia, Cambodia, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand and the Middle East, in particular Iran, Iraq, Turkey and Syria.

Each region of Asia tends to have a unifying theme or symbol, such as common religious themes, philosophy or language. Asian art is extremely rich and diverse and spans thousands of years, in fact, the Victoria and Albert museum in London has an object in its East Asian collection made around 5,000 years ago. Some highlights include Japanese ceramics, bronzes, textiles, furniture, jade, metalwork, wood carvings, landscapes painted in a variety of media including ink, goldwork, bronzes, glass, baskets, woodblock prints, weapons, lacquerwork and calligraphy. From the Middle East come woven silks, embroidery and carpets, Egyptian wood carvings from the Mamluk sultanate period (1250 to 1517) and a vast number of decorative objects.

Interest in the beautiful craftsmanship and culture of Asian art from the 5th to the 19th century has always been strong, but since the 1990s, the market for Asian contemporary art in particular has grown increasingly stronger, thanks to the establishment of specialised museums such as the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, exhibitions and international recognition of Asian artists. Value of specific pieces of Asian art depends on rarity, provenance, quality of execution and condition, and the market is buoyant for good examples of this beautiful, intricate artwork. Our in-house experts have years of experience in assessing and valuing Asian art of all kinds, so do get in touch if you’d like to learn more about a piece you own, or discuss a potential sale or valuation.
