Della Robbia

22/03/2017     Ceramics

Discovered in a Wirral residence, these two rare Della Robbia plates are due to be sold in our 26th -27th April Fine Art Sale.

The two pieces are incised and painted by Annie Smith with dominos and playing cards from the suite of hearts. The plates carry incised and painted marks to base, along with Annie Smith's monograms. The pieces measure 19.5cm diameter. The two pieces are both broken and restuck and therefore estimated at £100-200 however the rariety of these pieces could see this estimate being left behind.

Also included in the same sale are two fine Della Robbia vases. One vases is incised and painted with Chinese Lantern plant (physalis) design by Ruth Bare, known as the 'Small Moorish' shape no.65 in the 1896 catalogue, the piece measures 25cm high and is estimated at £500-700. The second 'Tall Lion Vase' circa 1900, is decorated with entwined flora and shamrock leaves by Violet Woodhouse. The vase is shape number 24 from the 1896 catalogue, measures 30cm high and is estimated at £400-600.

Both pieces are illustrated in 'The Della Robbia Pottery Birkenhead 1894 - 1906' by Peter Hyland, figures 149, and 258.
