Our 15th March Sale will contain a section of Arms and Militaria. The sale will include a good private collection of over 60 bayonets which has been built up over the last eleven years. The theme of the collection is World War One and the diversity in bayonets seen truly illustrates the number of countries that were sucked into the Great War. This is illustrated in the variation of the SMLE (Short Magazine Lee Enfield) bayonets seen on sale in March, with the same basic pattern being made in Britain, America, Australia, and India.
The sale will also include other arms and militaria from separate sources including an interesting and rare Smatchet with original leather scabbard. The Smatchet is a short heavy fighting knife designed by Captain William Fairbairn in World War II and is ‘an ideal close-combat weapon for those not armed with a rifle and bayonet’. Smatchet’s similar to this one were used by special forces and Commandos, SOE (Special Operations Executive) and OSS (Office of Strategic Services) within the British and American army from World War Two onwards.
